Many Thai people have elaborate and mystical tattoos (Sak) which are worn not for their cosmetic effect but for the magical protective powers they bestow. For hundreds of years Thai Soldiiers were feared for these markings on their skin and even today many Muay Thai Boxers wear tattoos to protect them in the ring. Muay thai boxers often have the monkey god Hanuman tattoo on them. Hanuman represents strength, stamina and agility, which are all excellent and desirable qualities for a Muay Thai fighter.
These Tattoos originate from the pre Buddhist era and the markings were a mixture of Buddhist prayers and sorcery spells and referred to as "Sak Yant" . They were applied not with a needle but with a sharpened stick, rather like the old fashioned quill used for writing, tapped into the skin.
Today, tattoos are very popular in Thailand and the rest of the World as a fashion statement and there are thousands of designs available.
