San Kamphaeng

Weaver at San Kamphaeng
This is the source of many of Chiang Mai's handicrafts with factories and showrooms lining both sides of the road. Silk, Celadon, Silver, Lacquerware, Bronze, Pottery, Furniture, Wood Carving, bring the tour buses and Tuh Tuk's from all over but the really interesting part about San Kamphaeng is that many of the factories actually show the visitors how their products are made. From tiny silk worms to silk dresses is a fascinating story. Watch the silversmiths at their trade. How is Lacquerware actually made. After a visit to San Kamphaeng, all your souvenirs will have a story to tell.

The Night Bazaar

Right in the centre of the city on Chang Klan Road is the most famous market in Chiang Mai. Handicrafts of all
desNight Bazaar, Chiang Maicriptions from the slightly tacky to incredible wood carvings are on sale at the hundreds of stalls lining both sides of the street and in the two storey Vieng Ping Bazaar. Silk, Silver and other jewelry, wooden artifacts, toys and games are in abundance. Here you can find Antiques, Designer clothing (à la Night Bazaar), the latest and often not yet released DVD Movies, and great looking copies of just about everything worn by the rich & famous. You can have your portrait painted by one of the highly skilled artists and it can usually be collected the following day. They do incredibly detailed work from just a photo.
This is probably the best opportunity you will have to test your bartering skills but be warned, these are professional barterers, you'll get a good price but are unlikely to get a bargain. Barter with humour and a smille and you may be lucky.

Sunday Walking Street

Relatively new to Chiang Mai and in its new location stretching from Thapae Gate to WaSunday Walking Street, Chiang Mait Phra Singh along the whole length of Ratchadamnoern road is the Sunday Walking Street. Open Sundays from late afternoon until about 10pm, it has become incredibly popular with both locals and tourists. It's a traffic free zone which is just as well as there's hardly room to move. Packed with stalls selling a huge variety of handicrafts and souvenirs it has become real competition to the better known Night Bazaar. Here prices are possibly better also. There are coffee shops , restaurants and food stalls for when you need to get out of the throng and rest your feet. A really great addition to Chiang Mai's shopping scenebut be sure to go early to miss the crowds.
